This project offers an interesting example of contemporary cottage design that upgrades without sacrificing budget or tradition. The site of the project is typical of the Maine coast. The area contains a rocky serpentine, shoreline, tall pines, and water vistas dotted with small, offshore islands.
Our design preserves the New England custom of design efficiency, yet retains a charming and intimate character. The house, meant as place of gathering, can comfortably accommodate 10. A broad porch along the west side offers protected lounge spaces facing the water vistas. The porch area adjacent to the kitchen is screened for bug-free, al fresco dining. A respect for the tradition informed our selection of the colors and finishes of the final design. With careful planning and a efficient design, we completed the project for under $80,000 in 1991.
