The Henry Art Gallery had outgrown its 10,000 SF building and needed to expand four-fold into a facility that would support its vision for the 21st century. The challenging site required a bold composition to recognize a major visual axis and respectful incorporation of the existing building. Preserving a view of the statue of George Washington from 15th Avenue was a motivating factor in curving the main roof and minimizing the height of the street wall. The new gallery spaces were designed to be flexible and allow a variety of exhibit installations, while presenting sufficient character to engage the visitor with the space. The facility also includes a 150 seat auditorium, children’s workshop, on-site collection storage, and special events accommodations. The existing building received extensive seismic upgrading and new mechanical systems.
