Located at the end of a long campus axis, the main entrance to the UNCC college of architecture invites visitors and students into an open daylit rotunda that is the focus of the building organization. Running perpendicular to the entrance axis is a 200′ long, skylit court that serves for casual student interaction, year-end design pin-ups, parties, and other events. It separates the two main learning activities of the program two levels of design studios to the west and technology laboratories to the east. The studios were carefully configured to allow flexibility within a basic organizational structure. The upper studio level has a series of north-facing light monitors that admit abundant indirect natural light. The technology labs include space to test lighting and mechanical equipment, material crushing machines in the structural lab, a metal shop and a wood shop. The building also includes multiple classrooms, a lecture hall, special exhibit gallery, library, faculty offices, and administration offices.
